October! Already!? The 2018-2019 school year is flying by. Along with a new month come new units of study. Here are the updates for each class:

Seventh Grade Social Studies

First, the students did an outstanding job on their first chapter test and are showing a great work ethic overall. This week we are studying the early European colonization of North and South America. The students will be learning about the empire that Spain created and how that compares to the strategies and motives of the French, Dutch, and English.

Eighth Grade Social Studies

The eighth grade students also deserve kudos for an excellent performance on their Civil War test. This was a challenging unit, but the students rose to the occasion and put forth their best efforts. Now that we have wrapped up the Civil War, we will begin studying the time period of rebuilding, known as Reconstruction. We will especially focus on how this time period affected the civil rights of African Americans for generations, and how the issues were truly not addressed until the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.

Eighth Grade Religion

In eighth grade religion, we have spent several lessons talking about the dynamics of the rather dysfunctional families of the Old Testament, and how God can still use deeply flawed individuals for His will. We will continue this “theme” by studying Joseph and his brothers; quite possibly one of the worst cases of sibling rivalry and jealousy in recorded history. However, we will end the week on a positive note by studying the call of Moses and how God saved His people through the Passover. This will end Unit 1. The test will most likely be on Thursday, October 11th. The memory work for this week is the Lord’s Prayer, which is on page 17 in Luther’s Small Catechism.
