In second grade, the new year has been off to a great start! We will be very busy this week incorporating more writing into our days in order to strengthen our blossoming writing skills. We have been polishing up on our math addition skills as well, adding three 2-digit numbers. At the end of the week there will be a math test on Thursday and a reading and spelling test on Friday.

We will read Jellies,The Life of a Jellyfish in our student books.

The Spelling words for the week include contractions I’m, don’t, isn’t, can’t, we’ll, it’s, I’ve, didn’t, you’re, that’s, wasn’t, you’ve, they’re, and wouldn’t as well as us and them.

We will be looking at verbs in the past, present and future as well as adding suffixes -er and -est to words.

Our writing activities for the week will include informative writing and journal writing. We will focus on our New Year’s resolutions and steps to take when building a snowman!

This week in Math we will complete Chapter 4, adding two and three 2-digit numbers.

Social Studies Lesson 4 continues and we explore the meaning of cultural diversity. We will talk about Martin Luther King and how he promoted peace and equality.

Science will explore questions about the new season that has begun: winter! How do local Long Island animals survive in the winter?

Handwriting continues as we learn letters f and k in cursive.

These are just the highlights of our week, as our day of learning together consists of so much more!

Please send in new sets of crayons, erasers and pencils to replenish and renew if your child needs these important tools.

Kindly label all sweaters, hats, gloves, etc. with your child’s name.

Please note that in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., school will be closed next Monday, January 20th.

Please sign up to be a Mystery Reader! The following dates are still available: 3/27, 4/3, 4/24, and all Fridays in May. Thank you Mrs. Rucker who so kindly shared the book, I Am Enough. We enjoyed your visit!
