This Week in Art

ECC Classes:  All classes will view artist Alexander Calder’s Mobile Circus — video from the Whitney Museum.  Artist A. Calder made Kinetic/Mobile Sculptures out of assorted assemblage such as paper towel rolls, yarn, fabric, balloons, piping, wire and cork.  In this video Calder recreates a live circus performance using his creations of kinetic sculptures to perform the motions of trapeze artists, clown entertainers, lion tamers and the like.

Kindergarten:  The class will practice appropriate watercolor skills to create a stained glass type of cross for the church season of Lent.

Gr. 1:  This week we will finish up our Chagall-inspired DREAM drawings.

Gr. 2:  Second graders are working on a drawing of an occupation after last week’s viewing of how different artists’ depict occupations in their work.

Gr. 3:  The Third Grade Class will be taking a tour of our church’s different types of Stained Glass.  This will culminate in the students making their own Stained Glass designs.

Gr. 4:  This class will be finishing up their Rubens’-inspired drawings of Christ’s Crucifixion.

Gr. 5:  Grade Five will be building on their knowledge of Stained Glass design after taking a quick refresher tour of the church’s stained glass.  We will then create a simplistic stained glass design using black construction paper and cellophane.

Gr. 6:  This class will spend half of the classing finishing up last week’s project.  The class will be introduced to various artists’ use of positive negative design in their artwork.  Each student will then create their own Positive/Negative design using simple objects or letters and contrasting crayon colors.

Gr. 7:  This should be our last class to finish weaving our Mug Rugs.  I can’t wait to display the Seventh Graders’ creative work!

Gr. 8:  Grade Eight will use this week’s class to complete their Rotational Symmetry design project.  This art project coincides with our Math curriculum’s topic of Symmetry.

ART Elective:  The class will be introduced to the Art of Quilling.  They will be shown a video tutorial on various quilling techniques and will view samples of quilling artwork.  Students will use cut strips of colored paper to glue down to a pre-drawn pattern on background paper.
