READING – Our essential question this week is, “What is the same about all families?” The class will answer the question as we read and discuss the stories, Building with Dad, What Makes a Family, and Poems about Families. You can help by discussing things you enjoy doing as a family, different names you call family members, ie. mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa, etc., how families help each other, family rules, and how families are alike and different. The students will also be reviewing the letters A-a – O-o, identifying rhyming words, discussing the main idea of a story, learning the word “I”, and reading two stories in their Readers entitled, What We Can Do and We Can Make It. The first few stories in the Readers are stories without words. We discuss the pictures and how pictures can help us tell a story. You can help by discussing picture details when you read with your child at home.

MATH – In Chapter 1 we will continue to explore numbers, specifically modeling, counting and writing number 5, reading the number words one, two, three, four and five, learning ways to make five, (ie. 3+2, 4+1), and ordering numbers 1-5. You can help by practicing reading the number words, counting items of various amounts, and practice writing numbers on lines from 1-5.

RELIGION – We continue to discuss the creation of Adam and Eve and the first sin.

SOCIAL STUDIES –  We will do some activities and have discussions that relate to learning more about ourselves and our families.

SCIENCE – Our discussions and activities will center around learning about apples, Johnny Appleseed, apple tasting and graphing our favorite tasting apple.

HANDWRITING – The students will continue to practice writing their names with a focus on using a capital letter for the first letter in their name and lower case letters for all the other letters in their name. You can help by reinforcing this at home.
