READING- Our essential question this week is, ” Why do we have rules at school?” The stories Friends at School, How Do Dinosaurs Go to School and My School Bus, will help us answer the question. The class will also review alphabet letters, learn some beginning sounds in words, identify nouns for places, talk about the characters in stories, learn about words that are opposites, (antonyms), and read and spell the high frequency word “like.” You can help by discussing our school rules and how they may be different and/or similar to family rules. Practice reading the words “I” and “like” and use them in a sentence. You may even wish to have your child write a sentence using the words for extra practice. Continue to read to your child on a daily basis and ask them questions about the text to be sure they comprehend the story. Discuss the meanings of any new vocabulary words in stories you read.

MATH- We will complete Chapter 1 on Wednesday, and the pages from the Math book will be sent home with an information sheet of concepts you should study to help your child prepare for their test. These concepts include: counting, modeling, recognizing, and writing numbers 0 – 5, writing numbers 0 – 5 in sequence, and reading the number words, zero, one, two, three, four and five. Our test will be on FRIDAY, 10/5.

RELIGION- We will continue our discussion on sin and forgiveness.

SCIENCE- Our topic of apples continues into this week, with a focus on, parts of an apple, and making an apple word wheel, in which we will read words associated with apples.

SOCIAL STUDIES- Fall changes and school rules will be reinforced.

HANDWRITING- The students will practice their first stroke, which is “pull down.” Please reinforce proper pencil grip.

REMINDERS

Students are not permitted to wear sneakers to school unless they are wearing uniform shorts, even on Gym days. This Friday is the last day for uniform shorts until Spring.

Many of the children have been drinking water from their thermos at snack time. If you wish your child to have water from home instead of the milk/juice they are “signed up” for please let me know.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK  When someone does you wrong, don’t do what comes naturally; do what comes supernaturally. Love him.
