Week 3

We are off to a great start. I am truly enjoying getting to know all the students in the class. We have Back to School night on Thursday night. Please make every effort to attend as I will be going over important information. I feel confident that we are going to have a fabulous year.

 

Picture Day is Thursday. This is a uniform day.

 

I will be sending home completed work folders on Tuesdays. Please sign them, remove the papers, and send them back to school on Wednesdays.  

 

Scholastic book orders forms went home last week. They are due on Tuesday,  September 19th.  You can always order books online by going to Scholastic.com/readingclub  and using our classrooom code GZBYH.

 

Science: We have a new series this year. Our first unit is on engineering processes. We will be spending some time on identifying the problem.

 

Math: We are continuing to work addition strategies for 3-digit numbers. On Thursday we are having a quiz that will cover vocabulary, adding odd and even numbers, using compatible numbers to estimate sums, and summing 2- and 3- digit numbers. On Friday, we begin our focus on subtraction.

 

Religion: We are studying who is God and what is the Bible.

 

Social Studies: We are beginning our unit on Mexico. The students will locate Mexico on the map.They will be able to describe where it is geographically located, the different types of land formation, the plants and animals, as well as what it is like living in different climates.  They will learn the following vocabulary words: geography, land formation, plains, plateau, volcano, rain forest, and climate.

 

ELA:  Our spelling words this week are spoke, mile, save, excuse, come, invite, cube, price, erase, ripe, broke, flame, life, rule, these, those, surprise, and decide.  We are reading The Trial of Cardigan Jones. We will be discussing why the courts are an important part of government. The vocabulary words are  trial, jury, convince, guilty, pointed, honest, murmur, and stand.

The target skills we are working on are  conclusions and author’s word choice.  We are also focusing on the  target strategies infer/predict.  Our writing will focus on dialogue and its purpose. For grammar, we are identifying different kinds of sentences: command, exclamation, statement, and questions. We will have our spelling, comprehension,  vocabulary, and grammar  test on Friday, September 22nd.
